Shea butter, commonly known as Karité, is derived from the Shea Nut Tree (butyrospermum parkii) which grows in the western region of Africa. The fruits of these trees contain a nut which is dries and ground. The powder is then boiled in water to release an unctuous substance which rises to the top and solidifies on cooling to create Shea butter. This natural product has been used for centuries in Africa to moisturize and protect the skin from sun, wind, heat and salt water. Traditionally, Shea butter has been used in the treatment of, among other things, dry skin, wrinkles and blemishes and softening of stiff muscles. It is also a valuable source of food in Africa.

Due to its unsaponifiable nature, Shea butter does not rob the skin of its natural oils and can actually help stimulate collagen production. This explains why it can be very effective in helping to alleviate wrinkles, scars and burns.

Recently, Shea butter has been medically studied as an anti-inflammatory topical cream that can be helpful in bringing the muscles and skin back into balance after sport activities, due to its content of stigmasterol – a steroid-like substance (Hampton). Shea butter is also helpful in cases of eczema and dermatitis and contains chemical constituents that help to heal bruising and soreness’ (Falconi).

What is Jojoba oil?

Jojoba oil is extracted from the seed of the Jojoba tree (Simmondsia chinensis) which is found in parts of the United States, Israel and the Caribbean. Jojoba oil is actually a wax ester, and not an oil. Jojoba oil is said to be most akin to the human skin oil, which explains why it is so important in maintaining the chemistry and balance of the skin.

Jojoba oil is one of the best skin moisturizers that nature can offer. It spreads well, does not evaporate, thus leaving a thin protective layer on the skin that remains even after washing.
